Summary

Allison Faris conducted a gap analysis of Amgen's energy management program and developed an alternative energy screening tool.

Goals

Allison Faris joined Amgen’s Engineering Technical Authority as its first EDF Climate Corps fellow. Amgen is the world’s largest independent biotechnology company, and it uses tools such as advanced human genetics to unravel the complexities of disease and understand the fundamentals of human biology. The fellowship immersed Faris in the administrative headquarters, research and development and global manufacturing activities of the company.

The main objective of the summer fellowship was to conduct a gap assessment of Amgen’s energy management program, focusing on sites with the highest energy use in Amgen’s portfolio. 

Solutions

Three gaps were identified that presented opportunities for energy savings and associated carbon emission reductions: 1) monitoring energy at all levels; 2) focusing first on operational projects; and 3) applying best practices across all sites. An example application of energy monitoring at one site identified a programming issue with newly installed air handling units that had gone undetected.

Utilizing unit energy cost, Faris also helped develop a screening tool to identify which alternative energy technologies make financial sense and should be investigated further. 

Potential Impact

The gap analysis and alternative energy screening tool could be used to help Amgen’s Global Utilities team create an effective strategy to reach its 2020 target for energy reduction.
